Light Arcanine Holo - Japanese Darkness and to Light
£108.00
Description
Light Arcanine holo from Darkness, and to Light (known as Neo Destiny in English), released in April 2001 as the fourth and final set of the Japanese neo era. The artwork is by Atsuko Nishida, who is best known as the original designer of Pikachu. The Japanese name for this card is "Yasashii Windie," which translates to "Gentle Windie," perfectly capturing the concept of a Light Pokémon. The "Light" mechanic was introduced in this set as the counterpart to "Dark" Pokémon from the earlier Team Rocket expansion. Where Dark Pokémon represented those raised through harsh training and cruelty, Light Pokémon were nurtured with care and kindness by their trainers. Light cards had distinctive white and gold artwork borders, higher HP than their regular versions, and attacks that often supported other Pokémon on the bench rather than purely dealing damage. Light Arcanine's attack, Gentle Flames, even does reduced damage against weaker Pokémon, reflecting its benevolent nature. Arcanine itself is classified as the "Legendary Pokémon" in the Pokédex (not to be confused with actual legendary Pokémon). Its design draws from the Chinese guardian lions and the mythical shishi, and its Pokédex entries consistently reference Chinese legends, describing it as a majestic creature whose beauty and grace have inspired awe for centuries. In Generation I, Arcanine was originally planned to be a legendary Pokémon alongside Zapdos and Articuno, which is why a stone tablet depicting it appears in the second episode of the anime.
