£36.00
Description
Hitmonchan ex from the Japanese Expansion Pack, the very first set of the EX era, released in January 2003. This set marked a major turning point for the TCG, introducing the Pokémon-ex mechanic where stronger cards came with the risk of giving up two prize cards when knocked out. It also brought in the Generation III card design overhaul with silver borders replacing the classic gold look. Hitmonchan ex was one of the original Pokémon-ex printed, making it a piece of TCG history. Hitmonchan holds a special place in the competitive history of the Pokémon TCG. The original Base Set Hitmonchan was one of the most dominant cards in early tournament play, earning the nickname "Hitmonchamp" for its efficiency. A 70HP basic that could deal 20 damage for a single Fighting energy on the first turn was exceptional in 1999. It was a staple of the infamous "Haymaker" archetype that dominated the early competitive scene. The Pokémon itself is based on the legendary boxer Jackie Chan, with its Japanese name Ebiwalar referencing the Japanese boxing champion Hiroyuki Ebihara. Its counterpart Hitmonlee is named after Bruce Lee, and the later addition Hitmontop references the martial art of capoeira.
