Description

Blastoise from the Promo Card Pack 25th Anniversary Edition (s8a-P), released in October 2021 alongside the 25th Anniversary Collection. Another entry in the promo set celebrating Pokémon's quarter-century milestone, featuring iconic Pokémon reprinted with fresh artwork. Blastoise is one of the original three final-stage starters from Generation I, and it has always lived slightly in the shadow of Charizard commercially despite being equally beloved by fans who grew up choosing Squirtle. Its design is based on a giant tortoise with water cannons protruding from its shell, capable of firing jets of water with enough force to punch through thick steel. The Pokédex describes it deliberately aiming its shots with precision, adjusting the cannons for accuracy over distance. In the early competitive TCG, Blastoise was the centrepiece of one of the most dominant deck archetypes in the game's history. The Base Set Blastoise's "Rain Dance" Poké-Power let players attach as many Water energy as they wanted in a single turn, completely breaking the normal pacing of the game. Combined with Pokémon Breeder to skip Wartortle entirely, "Raindance" decks could power up devastating attacks by the second turn. It was the main rival to Haymaker decks built around Hitmonchan and formed one half of the defining competitive rivalry of the original TCG era. Of the three Kanto starters, Blastoise has always represented the defensive, methodical choice. Where Charizard is raw power and Venusaur is strategic sustain, Blastoise is the reliable tank. Its Mega Evolution in Generation VI added a single massive cannon on its back, and its Gigantamax form in Generation VIII turned its shell cannons into a volcanic-looking turret. No matter the era, the design philosophy stays the same: a walking fortress.
